Just call me ... Grandfather

Wed Nov 18, 2009, 3:57 AM
As my watchers will already be aware, I became a grandfather last Thursday - all the details are in the comments in this deviation:

But in light of this joyous event, I have been considering what to be "called", and a thought has occurred to me. Since I have a number of friends and watchers whose native tongue is not English, I want to ask this question: What is the word for "grandfather", or "grandpa", in your language?

Oh, and I have another "baby" - a new Nikon D300! I considered a D200, but it seemed that the price on eBay for a D300 wasn't much higher, so a D300 it was! I have a very thick manual and a number of books to read, but it will be worth it!

Since I'm here, I might as well share some more news. In mid-October, my employer of 14 years decided to out-source its IT function, and so my position (along with 2 others) became redundant. Since then, I've been doing some seminars (funded by the company) to get me back into the groove of doing "getting a job" things, which have so far been very beneficial. It's given me the freedom to consider other areas of endeavour than IT, which I've been in for the last 25 years. I'd love to move into photography full-time, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have a few ideas, but I've never been great at selling myself, so any ideas (or commissions :giggle:) would be gratefully received.

Allo Allo Grandpa Beardy :)
It is I LeClerc. Well no, it's actually me CJ!!!
Congratulations and commiserations to you all at the same time. What fantastic news for the Small family with such a bundle of joy coming into this world. As for the other nasty business, i did hear on the grapevine (no pun intended) from Koko that you had been let go - very sorry to hear about that and i really do hope they looked after a very deserved employee? There's so much to talk about so give me a graham bell (if you still have my #?)one day and we can talk cameras (yep i got a newie too - Can 5D) and all that other stuff.

Regards Mr CJ

Why didn't I think of contacting you here or on RB? Dumb arse!

Maybe I should get the little one to call me "Beardy" haha! She is such a joy (but one forgets how much hard work, this many years on! :) - they have been with us since they left hospital). Thanks for your kind wishes, CJ - she really is a lovely new addition to the family!

Yes, the fact wasn't a shock so much as the timing ... But you know what - it was such a relief in many ways. There is so much crap going on, and so much that's just not done - even now! - and now I don't have to do any of it! And yes, I did get a pretty good payout (no other way to afford a D300! lol), and there's still a good chunk of it left in the bank.

I think I still have all your details - if not, I'll note you, and you can send it that way (remains private). Love to talk cameras and techniques with you, my friend! A 5D - now that is fancy! A Mk II? It seems to be the pick atm - it's full-frame, 21MP, or something silly like that, isn't it? You'll be producing bloody billboards soon hahaha! Nikon's offerings in the full-frame range are waaaay too expensive for me to consider - the D300 is DX format, 12.1MP. I've just looked at some images I took today, and I can't believe the quality compared to the D50 - it's amazing! Very much looking forward to a chat - one McW escapee to another ;).

Talk soon,
Regards, Beardy.
